How Clean Is Your Glass of Wine?

25/02/2015 By Gen Lynch

cleaning in placeWine connoisseur or not – wine – be it a crisp chardonnay sipped on a breezy, summer’s evening or a rich, fruity pinot noir sampled in front of a warm fire – often features in many of life’s events. However before taking that first sip, spare a thought for the many steps that ensure the purity of the tempting liquid in your glass.

Reducing the risk of cross-contamination between batches of wine and controlling harmful bacteria are essential elements in processing and preserving high quality products, and necessary to establishing and maintaining the hard fought for and well deserved reputation of your label.

The sterilisation of processing filters, pipelines and bottling plant plays a vital part in the battle for supremacy, a factor recognised by a leading South Island bottling facility when they sought assistance of the process engineering experience offered by Jonassen Industrial Projects to overview and provide advice on an upgrade to their cleaning system.

Driven by a desire to give their clients the ultimate confidence that their sterilisation process is 100% assured, the revised system includes fully automated PLC controlled sequential pump and valve operation with total feedback linked to a state of the art data logging system. With full flow, pressure and temperature control and a ‘Nitrogen-test’ filter integrity cycle the system has been design by JIPL to minimise water usage and to operate in a time saving ‘lights-out’ situation, ensuring that the plant is ready for operation at the start of the working day.

However the services offered by JIPL to the wine and brewing industry do not stop here.

Minimising water usage and controlling waste water quality and contamination are vital parts of the cost saving and production operations within the industry and can offer a notable competitive advantage in today’s market.

Specialising in waste water treatment for over 20 years, Jonassen Industrial Projects have established and developed relationships with global leaders of complementary equipment to answer these objectives.

Of significant interest to the wine and brewing industry is the ability to screen waste water for contamination of such items as bottle tops, glass, packaging, labels and plastics. The CDEnviro  MSU:10 screening unit is a high efficiency wet screening unit ideally sized for the New Zealand market providing robust reliable operation with minimum input and maximum benefit. The MSU:10 maximises the potential for material recovery for re-use and reduces transportation costs, as it can be moved to and from sites easily and cost effectively.
