Immediate Improvements and Energy and Gas Savings

One of JIPL’s clients, a leading New Zealand manufacturer and exporter of innovative designs and aluminium extrusions and extrusion-based building systems, recently engaged JIPL to upgrade and modify their powder coating oven.

The manufacturer was experiencing delays in their throughput as their oven could only utilise the middle third of the oven envelope for their extrusions due to problems with the airflow.

JIPL undertook to optimize the oven, maximizing the airflow system for long extrusions and allowing the full height of the oven to be utilised.

Airflow (volume and velocity) is critical for effective and efficient curing of coated products. JIPL is at the forefront of heat transfer technology and has years of experience in air transfer systems, both heating and cooling and was the first to bring this innovative technology to NZ.

JIPL stripped out and replaced all internal ducting to improve the airflow and added an extract fan and a  new burner.

JIPL also added their unique air seals at both ends of the oven. Air seals prevent costly spillage of hot air from the oven and prevent temperature variations within the oven. The air seal design originated in the UK and has been significantly developed by JIPL over several years to reduce hot air losses (and ambient air ingress at floor level) by up to 90%.

The results of the upgrade were immediate. The improvements provided an additional 50% airflow over the product and allowed the client to utilise the whole envelope. The client is now getting cure values above 130% in all sections of the oven on their products. The conveyor speed has also increased by 10%. The combination of increased cure envelope and increased conveyor speed has resulted in a significant throughput increase.

JIPL air transfer technologies provide major savings in energy and gas usage.  A heat transfer system (be it an oven or cooling plant) that is properly designed, quality manufactured, and properly installed, requires minimal maintenance.
