Metal Membranes for the Dairy and Food Industry

11/04/2019 By Gen Lynch

Metal membrane technology is revolutionizing the dairy industry/sector transforming the filtration methods of the past 50 years.

metal membranes

JIPL /FL with AMS Filtration has run several New Zealand pilot studies using the world’s only metal titanium membrane pilot unit. The results have been staggering – with astounding results reducing water content at an extremely high level. Examples – Raw Milk, solid content can be reduced by 70% with the use of titanium membrane technology. This huge reduction in water content means pre-treatment can be avoided or cut down significantly.

The membrane concentrates the protein, dewatering the milk by up to 70% and produces water suitable for reuse. Suspended solids and solids of high molecular weight are retained, while water and low molecular weight solutes pass through the membrane.
In modern dairy processing AMS titanium metal membranes could play a major role in the clarification of the milk, increasing the concentration of the selected components as well as separations of the specific valuable components from milk or dairy by-products, etc.

This is very important for the dairy industry – this huge volume reduction of milk and whey, milk solids recovery and water reclamation.

This is an environmentally friendlier, green technology due to the low consumption of energy used by the spray dryers. With the ever-increasing costs of energy, membrane technology is the way of the future. In normal filtration 1000’s of old plastic membranes hit our landfills every year, inordinate amounts of chemicals are also used in the cleaning process of keeping those membranes clean, that is NOT the case with our titanium metal membranes.

Metal membrane Technology

AMS Filtration membranes and systems are remarkable. The AMS DuraSter© range of metallic microfiltration membranes offer a new level of performance, corrosion resistance, and durability in crossflow membrane micro-filtration. They are 100% titanium which overcome the limitations of past filtration methods, and deliver superior performance. These metal membranes allow much easier cleaning in place (CIP) and additional sanitation steps, (without or much limited the use of chemicals). There are no limitations around pressure, flow, pH and temperature. They are non-corrosive and of course high solids application are a matter of fact.

Metal membranes are used in the industry for various purposes like extending the shelf life of milk without exposure to heat treatment, standardization of the major components of milk for tailoring new products as well increasing yield and quality of the dairy products, and concentrating, fractionation and purification of milk components especially valuable milk proteins in their natural state.

In the cheese industry, titanium metal membranes can increase the yield and quality of cheese and control the whey volume, by concentrating the cheese milk. With the advancement of this astounding new membrane technology it is possible to recover growth factor from whey.

Because of its innovative and fundamentally new way of making membranes, AMS titanium metal membranes offers unique solutions that are not achievable by other means.
AMS Titanium metal membranes have a variety of benefits over the other types of membranes & Filtration (e.g. ceramic or polymeric), which makes them suitable for very wide cross-industry applications.

Unique AMS titanium metal membranes advantages:

• Robust surface – virtually indestructible
• Easier to backwash
• High flux levels
• Cost-effective
• Low fouling rates

This is the next development of filtration expanding boundaries, reducing chemicals and changing the environmental landscape for many years to come.
